Davao and Cagayan de Oro - Mindanao Island

The Immanuel Deaf Center at Davao on Mindanao Island provides excellent kindergarten to college education. There are nearly 100 students attending this school that has been educating the deaf community for almost 20 years. Most students come from remote areas and live at the school during the term; travelling home for holidays. Many students start school late due to distance and some students are orphans, the school is their only home. Our dedicated leaders at Davao give these children special love and care.

Older students are very grateful to have the opportunity to complete High School and College at a school specifically for the deaf. Most families cannot afford to pay for their deaf children to go to school and they need financial support through sponsorship. A High School group for blind students has commenced and music is now enhancing the school community.

This school is very highly regarded by the local government and community. It plays an active part in community deafness awareness programs and presents dramas at local festivals. University students visit to learn about education of the deaf. Many students have trained at this college and now work as teachers or leaders in deaf communities in the Philippines. Several deaf communities have been established on Mindanao Island where deaf people help each other in times of need.

On the northern part of Mindanao Island at Cagayan de Oro, a deaf community and dormitory provides a place for older students to live while they learn vocational skills. Older deaf students and blind students from this area move to the Davao Learning Center for high school and college education.

Our leaders at Cagayan de Oro have shown great initiative in purchasing and developing a rubber plantation a few years ago. The rubber trees have started producing rubber and once profits are realised, this project is expected to help support the school and community work on Mindanao Island. Deaf people will be regularly employed at the rubber plantation when the trees are in full production. They have also established a successful piggery which employs deaf workers. These pigs have one of the best views overlooking the river and surrounding hills; until they go to market. They are very happy, well managed pigs who love having their backs scratched.

From birth to sale, a period of about 3 to 4 months costs $80.00. The pig is then sold for about $120.00 making a profit of $40. This is multiplied about three times each year resulting in a profit of $120. An $80 gift can result in some $600 to the school over 5 years.

Computers are used for some of the students’ lessons, research and school projects. Computers, costing around $1,000.00, are a fantastic aid to deaf students because they do not have to rely on their hearing to use them.

Of course, we don't put pigs and computers into boxes and mail them overseas. Instead, each gift represents the life-changing work of the community project that your donation supports.
